Simulation Learning Events

Have you been away from the clinical setting for a while and need to regain clinical confidence? Perhaps you need to update your medical-surgical knowledge. Whatever the case, our RN Skills Enhancement Course will help you meet these challenges. We feature highly-qualified educators and access to advanced simulation facilities.

Fee: $300.00

The Healthcare Careers Discovery Program at Holy Name Medical Center's Institute for Simulation Learning is a simulation-based 1 week seminar for high school students interested in learning more about a career in healthcare. An active learning environment will include a combination of classroom and hands on experiences to prepare the participant for a successful future in any healthcare profession.

Applications will be accepted until April 1 at 11:59PM.

Objectives:

Learn from experienced medical professionals as they share their knowledge. American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR certification is included along with the opportunity to learn:

  • Vital signs assessment
  • Injection administration
  • Emergency response

Additionally, career development strategies will be presented, including:

  • Interview skills
  • Interpersonal communication
  • Résumé writing

Participants will be chosen by competitive application and receive a certificate of completion at the end of the session.

Cost:

Cost of the complete program including training materials, lunch, scrubs and training stethoscope is $799.00

ADVANCED Healthcare Careers Discovery Program. Returning students are matched with providers in their field of interest to observe these professionals. Roundtable discussions and presentations allow participants to share their knowledge. Simulated patient encounters require the students to respond to emergent situations and promote teamwork. New skills are introduced with hands-on demonstrations, including a special suturing workshop. As a take-away from the program, each participant records a professionally produced, personalized scholarship video showcasing his/her participation in the program and projecting his/her future potential in health care.


Elements of the Advanced Program will include:

Healthcare Provider CPR Certification

Building on Basic Life Support Certification from the introductory program, participants will earn American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR certification which is often required prior to entering advanced education in a healthcare related field.

Intense Observational Experiences

While the introductory program offered some observational experiences, participants in the Advanced Program will be matched with providers in their field of interest as much as possible and spend more intense time learning with these professionals.

Research Opportunities

Throughout the ADVANCED Program, participants will have access to Holy Name’s computer lab to learn more about what they are experiencing and witnessing each day. Round table discussions will allow participants to share their knowledge with one another.

Simulation Lab Experiences

Utilizing skills learned in the introductory program, participants will engage in simulated patient encounters to further hone technical and interpersonal skills. New skills will also be introduced with hands-on demonstrations.

Career Impact

How will participants leverage their involvement in the ADVANCED Program when applying for scholarships, honors programs or college entrance? Holy Name’s Media specialists will support the creation of a unique video for each individual participant outlining the program and including an individual interview for each student. Participants can use this professionally produced video brief as a unique demonstration of poise and scholarship.

Eligibilty:

Our ADVANCED Healthcare Careers Discovery Program is open only to high school students who have completed the Introductory program in 2016.

Tuition:

The course is $799 and includes all educational activities, lab coat and lunch each day.

Application Process:

Registration opens on February 8, 2017 at 7PM and will be on a first come first saved basis. 20 students will be accepted for each session.
